external pageNCCR Digital Fabrication and Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) are D-ARCH’s research flagships. They address the key challenges (digitalization, urbanization, and both environmental and social change) by means of coordinated research and resources. Besides these two theme-oriented projects, research at the Department is driven by the Doctoral School, which encompasses the three Doctoral Programmes for History & Theorie of Architecture, Architecture & Technology and Landscape & Urban Studies as well as the Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture. The Department sees the Doctoral School as a site where innovative research methods can meet and interact, ranging from the humanities, historical research, preservation, design, environmental and material studies to AI, robotics, acoustics, VR and digital modelling/mapping. The newly founded Doctoral programme in Landscape and Urban Studies, in particular, will contribute new cultural, environmental and societal themes to the research culture of the Department and reinforce ongoing research on the environment (LUS), global cities and urbanization (LUS), design culture (ITA), sustainability and reuse (IDB), and cultures of architectural knowledge (GTA).

Through these themes, the Department of Architecture pushes forward the research agenda alongside its five collectively agreed strategic areas of action.
