CAPTURING n2EDM
A cinematic experiment on a Physics experiment
An international collaboration researching on nEDM [neutron electric dipole moment] is currently building a new Physics experiment with an enhanced sensitivity in measurement, determined to investigate the limits of the Neutrons’ internal charge distribution. The experiment n2EDM is conducted at and by Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) together with an international team of physicists and collaborators.
In the frame of a Focus Work at the Departement of Architecture of ETH Zurich Joël Berger created a cinematic interpretation of n2EDM in form of a external page video clip. The Focus Work was conducted by the VOLUPTAS chair (Prof. Charbonnet/Heiz).
The ambition of the video is twofold:
- Finding a clear communication which can be understood as an introduction to the experiment for the broader public.
- Appropriating spatial characters which play core roles as of the subatomic cloud, the void of outer space and the human signs in between.
As the video points out, the n2EDM experiment has the capacity to shape the course of modern Physics. Either to a future where an electric dipole moment of the Neutron is understood to be existent or to a possible end for the search for it.
The project challenges disciplinary boundaries and propels transdisciplinarity as an agent of investigation. It was pursued over one accademic year and entails an extensive period of exchange and research.
