Master's thesis
General
The Master's thesis is completed within 16 weeks. The Master's thesis is the result of the student's individual performance and must be proof of the capability for independent design work (see art. 31.ff. of the Academic Regulations for the master's degree programme in architecture).
New format
The new format of the Master's thesis on a defined topic is intended to encourage more intensive processing and interaction between the architectural project and other disciplines. The preparatory work steps (preparation phase) are included and serve as the basis of the final project (elaboration phase). Overall, the academic component of the master’s thesis is to be strengthened.
The three most important changes in relation to the previous system:
- Instead of A, B and C topics, there is one general topic per semester on which the specific programmes are built.
- The master's thesis is no longer supervised by a single chair, but by a cooperation between design and specialized chairs.
- The master's thesis consists of two connected but clearly separated parts, which are both graded. The partial grades form the overall grade:
- Preparation (preparation phase: collection and viewing of literature, inspections)
- Elaboration (elaboration phase of the project).
Self-defined topic
Qualified students may – in consultation with a chair – pursue a self-defined topic. Detailed information, time flow and dates are available here:
Information: Publication of Master's thesis in the Research Collection
Students have the possibility of publishing their Master's theses in the Research Collection. To publish Master's theses in the Research Collection, a letter of recommendation from the respective supervisor is needed. You can find further information on the webpage.
